Esotericism and transcendental truth. Do you choose a path or does a path choose you?

It is both. The path chooses you and you choose the path. When you are born, according to Buddhism, you bring in what you have done in all your past lives, good and bad. So there are tendencies (call them congenital) which you have no control. e.g. like born in a Buddhist country. But you can always choose what you follow (acquired?) So you also chooses your path. But if you do not see a path, you cannot choose it… so how do you know that you are choosing is the right thing?
